“In a hundred years, when historians are looking back at reality TV shows to understand what the fuck was going on in American culture during the nation’s decline, there are going to be dozens, if not hundreds, of dissertations written on a short-lived series on the E! network called Pretty Wild.

Creator Dan Levy envisioned it as yet another show about a mother and her wild teenage daughters in star-studded, superficial Los Angeles—in this case, the mom was supposedly home-schooling the girls and basing her curriculum on the self-help film The Secret. But shortly after shooting the pilot episode, Alexis Neiers, one of those daughters, was arrested and charged with being part the “Bling Ring,” a group of teens who allegedly robbed the homes of celebrities, including Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton. To this day, Alexis denies that she was involved with these crimes, but the case and the ensuing publicity resulted in one of reality TV’s funniest (and saddest) moments: a weeping, clearly high Alexis screaming, “Nancy Jo. This is Alexis Neiers calling!” while leaving several hysterical voicemails for Vanity Fair journalist Nancy Jo Sales, who wrote that Alexis wore “six-inch Louboutin heels to court” when she actually wore “four-inch, little brown BeBe shoes.””

It’s been a while since I’ve decorated/updated (read: cleaned) my apartment. It’s tough sometimes, living on one’s own, to take the time and make a house (in my case a 1 bedroom flat) into a home. Sure, I read a lot of blog posts on different sites about stylish, cheap, and easy ways to keep up a home, but it still feels like I need to do so much to keep up with the modern style.

I know plenty of guys who don’t take care of their homes, and I feel embarrassed for them. I wonder who gets embarrassed for me?

What Are Cufflinks For?

After a conversation about office clothing this morning, my girlfriend asked me what the hell cufflinks were for, anyway. I told her what I knew, that cufflinks held together the cuffs of dress shirts, and now are more decorative than functional, and mentioned I needed to find a set of cufflinks in order to complete a suit I was to wear for a meeting in Manhattan next week.

Then it hit me.

Yes, she does love a well dressed man, and absolutely I am trying to accomodate (I rather enjoy dressing well) but my mind went somewhere else for a little while.

One could say part of me grew up, smartened up. I would have to slightly disagree and admit I might have lost a part of who I am. This is the first time I’ve ever sat behind a desk, completing tasks, and focusing my energy on droning that would result only in profits for shareholders. To take home a steady paycheque, and to have unparalleled benefits is an opportunity at which I never scoff, nor take for granted. Of course, there are many without as much as a low paying job where I have been offered a career seemingly on a silver platter. I count myself fortunate to furnish my life with nicer things; to have a home of my own, to eat, drink, and revel with friends. It just seems I have traded my traded my proverbial Molotov for a martini.

The day before May Day, a memo was circulated throughout the office. It was a warning to beware of protestors and demonstrations happening throughout New York primarily against the financial district. The words “demonstrators” and “havoc” rang through the office, when a colleague of mine replaced them with “revolutionaries” and “organisers”. I told her I used to be one of them. Those eMails were once written about me. I had been a social justice advocate and activist at university, and even in secondary. But not any more.

I still have the same beliefs. I still stand with the Workers of the World in their fight for a fairer world.

But sometimes I feel as thought I have become everything I have fought against.
